EdF of France and Germany's Eon could be broken up under far-reaching plans set out on Wednesday by European Union regulators to spur more competition in the EU's energy markets.

Foreign groups such as Gazprom, the Russian state-controlled gas company, would also face curbs on efforts to acquire energy assets in the union under the proposals by the European Commission.
