Paulson attacks 'shameful' lenders

Hank Paulson, US Treasury secretary, said on Tuesday that the conduct of some mortgage market participants had been "shameful" and called for consideration of a nationwide licensing and monitoring system for mortgage brokers.

In his most comprehensive speech yet on the meltdown in the subprime mortgage market and subsequent global credit crisis, Mr Paulson sounded a note of caution over banks' exposure to off-balance sheet vehicles.
