The bizarre spat between the German administration and the identical twins running Poland took another twist yesterday when Warsaw's own representative in Berlin sided with Germany.

In an extraordinary outburst, ambassador Andrzej Byrt told the Financial Times his government was "mishandling" a controversy over a satirical German newspaper article that compared president Lech Kaczynski to a potato. Mr Byrt said Warsaw's reaction had been "too emotional".
