As the curtain rises on Sam Shepard's new play, another gritty cowboy drama at first seems in prospect.

Many of his best known works have been set in a neon-lit world of trailer-trash, dingy diners and strong men with strong emotions - characters and props deployed to explain what he sees as the sickness of modern America.
