PM backs health job offer for US executive

Tony Blair yesterday defended the offer of the post of commercial director at the Department of Health to a US executive.

Asked if appointing Channing Wheeler, an American caught up in the scandal of postdated stock options - granted by his previous employer United Health Group - risked pouring petrol on the fire of opposition to private sector involvement in the NHS, he said: "You should appoint the best person for the job".
